Eight hikers enjoyed Forest Park in Jacksonville. With as much snow and rain as we’ve enjoyed this season, we were able to marvel at the volume of water coming down Cantrall Creek. We paused to take in Bear Claw Falls (named just as it appeared).
Leaving the creek to continue up the Halls of Manzanita Trail, we enjoyed the canopies of manzanita adorned with their spring buds and flowers, madrone and pine trees keeping them company, and periodic openings to magnificent views over the surrounding mountains and landscape south to Mt. Ashland.
After an out and back on the Canyon Vista Trail to pause and appreciate the long views, we took the Naversen Family Trail to the Dick Ames Shelter for lunch, and our customary dark chocolate. Then, on to the Ridgeview Trail and back down to the creek and across the bridge. We paused to appreciate the history of an early system used to bring the ample water from underground aquafer and the creek down to Jacksonville through hollowed out logs and underground tunnels.
Along our journey, we saw various wildflowers, including Solomon’s Seal, Hound’s Tongue, Trillium, and the early rise of Lily. We hiked just about 3.5 miles and with an elevation gain of at least 600’. On the return, one car stopped in Pheonix to get some yummy cheeses and Philip’s baguettes at the Cheese Cave.
